Andrew Joshua Matson was born at 1:26 pm on January 30th, and went to be with Jesus at around 5:30 pm on March 3rd. He spent his time here on earth living in the NICU at Centennial Hospital in Nashville. Jennifer has been giving daily updates, and we wanted to make them available to our friends and family. We were blessed to be Andrew's parents for 33 days. While we will always miss him and love him, we know that he is in a much better place where he will never again feel pain or discomfort. We thank God for blessing us with the time we had with Andrew. -Josh and Jennifer

Saturday, February 3rd

Today Andrew is doing much better! He was scheduled to have another transfusion, but his hematocrit was high enough so the transfusion was cancelled. The doctor also feels that the nitric oxide has done its job, so he is slowly weaning Andrew off of that. Unfortunately, to wean off of nitric oxide they must increase his oxygen requirements. Andrew’s ventilator is on 97% oxygen, the highest it has been. If his bilirubin is good tomorrow then he might get to stop the phototherapy and get his cloth sunglasses off. The neonatologist had to have a somewhat grim conversation with us again today. He said that such a high concentration of oxygen is poisonous to human beings. Andrew will likely not survive for a week if he has to stay on 97% oxygen. So the neonatologist was going to work on turning down the oxygen on his ventilator and we will pray that Andrew responds well.

I called his nurse, Zandria, around 8:15 PM for an update. They were able to decrease Andrew’s oxygen to 75% and he was tolerating it well. The amplitude on his ventilator, which determines how hard the oxygen is forced into his lungs, was also turned down from 40 to 38. What a relief that his sats were still above 95%. We are praying Andrew has a good night and a good bili check tomorrow so he can get the lights turned off. If they finish with the lights, then the nurses are going to save Andrew’s tiny cloth sunglasses for us.
