Andrew Joshua Matson was born at 1:26 pm on January 30th, and went to be with Jesus at around 5:30 pm on March 3rd. He spent his time here on earth living in the NICU at Centennial Hospital in Nashville. Jennifer has been giving daily updates, and we wanted to make them available to our friends and family. We were blessed to be Andrew's parents for 33 days. While we will always miss him and love him, we know that he is in a much better place where he will never again feel pain or discomfort. We thank God for blessing us with the time we had with Andrew. -Josh and Jennifer

Monday, February 26th

Weight: 3 lbs 0.3 ounces (1370 g)

First, I wanted to thank you all for reading along and praying for Andrew each day. I know I haven't responded to all the comments, but it is very encouraging for us to log in and see the love that everyone is showing for baby Andrew. Thank you!

No major news on Andrew today. Josh & I decided to switch off visiting for this week because it is so hard to take Haley down an hour each way, and then all she can do is wait while we go in and switch off visiting since she's too young to go in. So tonight was my night, and when Josh got home from work he stayed here with her and I went to visit.

Andrew is still on around 70% oxygen and the ventilator is still on 70. It scares me being that high. I am warming up to the idea of him having a trach. (permanent ventilator) and being at home for us. One of the things that Dr. Byrne mentioned over the weekend was that we should think about our goals for Andrew's life, whether that be for him to be home with us or what. I do want him home, even if it means a lot of nursing and hospital care. I want my baby to be comfortable, and I 100% believe that the more you are in the hospital and the more you have "done" to you, the harder it is to heal. My kidney doctor told me that last summer and I could sort of see it. Then when I was admitted in January before Andrew was born, I completely took that to heart and I really feel that by doing my best to get better on my own, get rid of the IV, stop medicines, etc., that worked. I would like to do the same for Andrew once he is stable enough.

He still has his umbilical IV, they are going to recheck his hematocrit tomorrow from the transfusion before they pull it out. His feeds increased to 20 cc's today and he did okay with them. He didn't have any spells while I was there and his sats were in the low 90's, so that was good. He was responsive to touch and to my voice tonight. It was hard to leave him when the nicu closed, I am going to miss him tomorrow when Josh goes.

Dear Jennifer
May God give you and your husband the strength that you need during trial times.
I am praying for Andrew and for both of you.

Wish they had a little webcam thingy for parents to be able to "check" their wee ones. That's a good idea about switching off visits though! Still praying Andrew continues to amaze these doctors with his progress.

Josh & Jennifer,
Just wanted to let you know that you have had the support of the Ashland Smiths. We have sent up many prayers for you and your amazing child and will continue to do so. As I looked through the blogs that you have posted I can't help but feel optimistic as his prognosis seems to get better daily! Stay strong and continue to trust in the Lord.
